TAIYAKI – Japas Cervejaria
Before opening:
Alc by vol. 10% – 55 IBU
Style: Imperial Stout with Red Beans Paste, Vanilla, Lactose
From the beerternational.com website: Imperial Pasty Stout with Red Beans paste, Vanilla and lactose. For this beer, we got inspiration from Taiyaki, a type of pastry very famous in Japan that is baked in the shape of a fish and had a texture similar to waffle dough. It comes with several types of fillings, the most traditional being with Anko, a sweet paste of Azuki beans that was also one of the ingredients chosen for this beer. Taiyaki is a pastry imperial stout with a velvety texture, smooth, with hints of chocolate, vanilla and caramel.
Beer Experience:
Poured from a can into a 10oz Tulip Glass. (Shout out to Living Waters Brewing, this glass gets used all the time, and again.)
Appearance: Pours dark and thick like. The pour is aggressive and a large head forms and has great retention.
Aroma: Smells like a milk stout with a hint of vanilla.
Taste: Heavy with smooth flavors. Vanilla for sure is most top of mind, with an added sweetness of the “Taiyaki” in mind.
Finish: The after taste has a resting bitter chocolate taste and caramel. Velvety is definitely the word for it after. Soft like.
Summary: Again, I’m surprised with Japas Cervejaria’s offerings. These beers have kicked ass so far. Taiyaki isn’t one that I’d be seeking out compared to the others, but I do enjoy a taiyaki pastry from time to time. I have the same feelings about this beer. I’d love to see how a Taiyaki pastry and this beer would taste together though.
