Smith & Lentz – Big Night Italian Pils @ Nashville, TN

Before opening:
Alc by vol. 5%

Style: Italian Pilsner
Zippy and classic like a German Pils but in your face noble hop character. It’s dry, crisp, pleasantly bitter and bursting with spicy, lemony, herbal aromas. Features hop head farms Zuuper Saazer and German Hallertau Blanc.

Additional notes:Fermented slightly warmer (though still cool lager temperatures) for a very slightly saison-y fermentation profile and dry-hopped at American rates with noble hops! It’s dry, crisp, pleasantly bitter and bursting with spicy, lemony, herbal aromas. Because of the dry-hoping and younger nature of the beer, it’s less clear and brilliant than our german or czech pilsners, so it’s fit for all the haze bro’s that want to be crisp bois

Beer Experience:

Poured from a can into a pilsner style glass (My new favorite glass from Living Waters Brewery @ Nashville, TN)

Appearance: Pours fluffly (that’s not a word but it is now) and hazy. Nice head retention.

Aroma: Hoppy and floral. Sorta astringent.

Taste: Light, hoppy, bitter, not quite soapy but is. Leaves a nice layer on the tongue that has a soft mouthfeel.

Finish: Finishes soft and with a light lift. Left with some hops stabbing around. I love it.

Summary: I’m excited to have Smith & Lentz back after 2020’s massive dump of a year. Between tornados and the pandemic they were sorely missed. Their pilsners are back and this one tastes fantastic! I can’t wait to get my hands on their other pils. This beer brings me back into the pilsner style (as well as earlier entries from years prior, just didn’t branch out yet) and I definitely making more effort in these styles moving forward. Cheers!
